Monthly Garden Tips: January

Flower/Landscape Gardens

  • Remove snow and ice from evergreens by gently tapping the underside of branches with a broom soon after the snow has fallen, before a few days of freeze and thaw.
  • Deadhead pansies regularly to prevent seed formation and promote flower production. Liquid feed pansies with fish emulsion monthly, if the soil is not frozen.
  • Cover newly planted perennials with Christmas tree boughs to prevent heaving.
  • Check fall-planted and shallow-rooted perennials for heaving during thaws. Press plants back into ground and replace soil around the roots to prevent desiccation of the roots.
  • Prune trees and shrubs when branches are easily visible and access is facilitated by lack of leaves.
  • Enjoy a cleaner and healthier garden throughout the winter. After applying a 1/4″ to 1/2″ inch layer of compost, apply a 2″ mulch.
  • Apply deer repellents regularly, especially after rain and snow.

Inside

  • Check houseplants frequently for disease and insect damage. Clean leaves of dust and remove dead leaves or broken branches. Mist with water if your house is dry. Do not water too much because houseplants are in a dormant phase. Wait until the days are longer again to fertilize.
  • Review last year’s garden notes and transfer important reminders to this year’s diary.
  • Plan and design new flower and vegetable beds. For vegetables, remember to rotate crops.
  • Look through catalogs and order seeds. Order summer bulbs and tubers early for best selection.
  • Start seeds for perennials, herbs and annuals that need 12 weeks or more to develop, such as Verbena, Lobelia and Geraniums.
  • Force bulbs like Narcissus and Hyacinth to brighten your home for a long winter.
