Sometimes the best houses, like tall tales, are those that have evolved over time. Similarly the “tales” told by historic homes are often the products of architectural evolution chronicling growth and changing styles from generation to generation, owner to owner.

“These sensitive additions and add-ons” tell a story, bookmarking “chapters in the home’s personal history,” says Scarlet Breeding. A principal with Alt Breeding Schwartz of Annapolis, Breeding sought to recreate and expand the story of a classic Maryland manor house for a new waterfront home she designed for Barbara and Harry Hirsch.
